Understanding the Lesson Flow and Instructional Mindset

Before using the Compass Interactive Workbook, it’s important to understand how activities are sequenced and with what purposes. Each unit has 2 lessons and each lesson consists of 2 learning cycles (total of 4 learning cycles. See the content page.) The flow of the activities in each learning cycle are sequenced with the Global Competence framework in mind. We also incorporated the understanding of the language structure phase to provide learners and teachers to engage in dialogue as they pay attention to the structure. Intentions for each stage are to help instructors with their mindset as they facilitate the activities in each phase.

How are the strategies we are using effective? Not all learning strategies are equal. Some have more impactful than others. In order to support teachers select teaching and learning strategies we have listed the effect sizes for some major strategies for each phase. Anything above .40 is considered to have a significant impact on learning. For example, strategy to integrate with prior knowledge has a .93 effect size. That’s more than double of an average impact (.40)! Additional strategies for each phase are listed with effect sizes to support the instructors with designing lessons for their students in mind.

List of possible tech tools are included and you should update it as new tools emerge. We believe the lesson flow and intentions behind each activity are important aspects in creating an engaging learning environment with or without the use of technology.

While Compass Interactive Workbook provides key activities with the intentional sequence, no one knows your students as well as you do! Therefore, it is important for you to structure your lesson to meet your students’ needs. We hope the list of strategies and tech tools are helpful for you as you design your lesson.
